  • How to : Use Google Sets And Squared To Enhance Your Linux Administration Skills

Long time back we thought of posting this, now the time has come. This post is all about how to use Google's tools "unknown to many" services to enhance your admin skills. I strongly suggest you to use these tools extensively to enhance your knowledge on a given topic. Most of the people will say use google, google is your friend etc. Even some times Google is refered as GOD in IT industry which is acronym to "Google Oriented Development" but they dont tell how to use it. This is one step towards it. OK lets come to what actually this Google Sets and Squired do for us.

    Google sets(
    http://labs.google.com/sets) :

Automatically create sets of items from a few examples. This can be easily explained by taking an example. Suppose you know
    How to add user,
    Remove user,
    Modify user details,
Delete user.. etc. In Linux user management. Now you want to enhance more of your knowledge on this area. So just type below commands in google sets form.
    useradd
    adduser
    usermod
    userdel
    newusers

When you sa grow to “small set” it will create a set of commands/related words up to 15 in number. If this 15 commands is not enough for you enhancing of knowledge you can “grow set”. Once that set is grown you can use that keywords to enhance your knowledge.

Enter your commands in to this form

Once you fill the form grow the set(click on small set button)
Now you can even grow this set.. to more :-)

Once you grow the set, see how many commands are there in user management it self.

    Google squared(http://www.google.com/squared) :
Google Squared takes a category and creates a starter 'square' of information, automatically fetching and organizing facts from across the web. This is more sofesticated with more options. Explore your self how to use google squared to get more out of google :-)

Home page of google squred where you can enter your data.

Enter data what you want to square
This is the output you will get.

Some of the people still have some confusion right? For those people here are the examples you can try.

    For Google sets :
    1. Try to know what other Linux flavours are there
Redhat, Centos, Fedorea, Debian, Ubuntu etc
    .

Do you know there is Linux distribution watching site where you will get up to date Linux flavor?
    Ans :
    Visit the site here :
    http://distrowatch.com/

    2. Try to know what other mail servers exists.
sendmail, postfix, fetchmail, qmail, procmail etc.

    3. Try to know how many greps are there.
    agrep, egrep, fgrep, grep, pgrep,

Do you know we have grep song? It starts like this agrep, bgrep, cgrep.... ygrep, zgrep?

    For Google squared:

    1. Try to know more about Raid levels, options, commands, advantages etc.
    RAID0, RAID1, RAID5, RAID6, RAID10 etc.

    2. Try to know more about searching commands.
grep, find, locate, sed, awk etc.

  • Google's Browser For Linux And MAC World Relesed

Hello every one...! Google released its browser for Linux and MAC world officially. There is an unofficial build which most of the Linux geeks using till this point. Now its officially build from Google with a rotine beta tag. Though Google (many)servers run on linux, Google have showed less intrest to linux based applications(For example there is no gtalk client for linux till this point officially). May be this is because of user base and market too. Google taken nearly 1.2years to develop a Linux based browser after Google chrome browser for windows announced in 2 September 2008.

There are many featuers in this browser though it is a beta release.

1.Extentions(Are some kind of add-ons with which we can add our favorite utilites to the browser).
2.Theams(We can chage the look of the browser).
3.A task manager(Google chrome considers each tab as an individual application, so if one tab crashes it will not affect other, we can kill that tab by using this task manager).
4.Efficiently utilization of empty tab by keeping nine most visited sites, so its easy to access that sites when we open a new tab.

And many more improvements to come. I will update this post with new findings.
    Installing a RPM package

1.Download it as RPMS (For Redhat, Centos etc)
    a.Install the rpm package
    rpm --ivh packagename.ver.arch.rpm
    Installing DEB package
Download it as DEB (for Debina, Ubuntu)
    2.Install deb package
    sudo dpkg -i package.deb

  • Get a free shell account online

GET A FREE SHELL ACCOUNT ONLINE.
A shell is an utility from where you can access Linux/*Nix servers from any where and execute the commands/scripts etc.

This post is for the users who are new to linux/Nix and want to feel/work on the Linux with out installing on the system. "Rootshell.be" is free online BSD(Berkeley Software Distribution) server where you can request a shell account and explore your self.

There are so many free shell providers on net but most of the servers/service providers will not give you free account simply, you have to prove your self to them that you are not a spamer and you are really in need of shell account to explore Unix.

    Here are some advantages:

    1. No need to install any unix systems.
    2. Good for beginers.
    Some disadvantages:

    1. You can work on only limited commands provided by the system administrator.
    2. Require any SSH clients(such as Putty) and internet connection.
Here are the links from where you can get your free Shell accounts

    1. rootshell.be (I personally used their service and its preaty good)

  • Distro's

    DISTRO'S.
This is my first post on Distro's. To discuss about Distributions, there is lots and lots of information about them which is beyond this blog. But I will try to cover as much good and best distros in the market on weekly basis.

To start with.. what is a Distro actually?
A "Linux distribution" (also called GNU/Linux distribution by some vendors and users) is a member of the family of Unix-like software distributions built on top of the Linux kernel. A distro some times refferd as "Distribution" or "Flavor".

    1. For General public purpose(like Ubuntu & Fedora).
    2. For Corporate purpose(like Cisco Linux & Oracle Linux).
    3. For Regionality purpose(like swecha Linux for People whose mother tongue is Telugu).
    4. For Basic routing purpose(like Linux router project).
A distro is nothing but linux kernel(in general it is considerd as core of operating system)+Applications(such as mail clients, servers, browsers office suite etc).

Suppose if we say Redhat linux it is equal to Linux kernel developed by linus torvalds + Applications developed by Redhat people.
For your information here are some details about Distro.
There are more than 500 Distro's in Linux followed by Unix with 150 flavors then with Windows around 50

Please keep an eye on this session to see coming Distro's.
